Chinatown Chicago: Chinatown Summer Fair Brings Shopping, Food and Art

CHINATOWN — Billed as one of the Midwest’s most ethnically unique outdoor events, the Chinatown Summer Fair will once again bring big crowds to the neighborhood’s main streets.

Organizers of the event say the fair is a “true celebration of Far East beauty and culture including food, art and music.”
“We want to bring people to Chinatown to explore our culture and our people too,” said Anita Lau, co-chair of Chicago Chinatown Special Events group that organizes the event, now in its 36th year.
The day will be filled with “Old and New World” music acts, activities for kids, arts and crafts and the anticipated dragon and lion dance ceremonies, which open up the fair. Classical Chinese dance and martial arts demonstrations are also planned throughout the day.
But one thing you won’t find on the streets are food vendors.
Lau said city vending permits are too costly for local restaurant owners, so guests looking to grab a bite to eat will be steered toward Chinatown’s many restaurants.
Admission to the fair is free. The event is sponsored by McDonald’s.
A full list of vendors and performers is expected later this summer. For more information, call 312-326-5320.
