Wo Hop’s survival secrets in Manhattan’s Chinatown
Like many small businesses in New York City neighborhoods, Chinatown and its eateries have been in flux. If you’re looking to dine at Happy Garden or Hung Fat, think again. They’re both shuttered, like so many other eateries in Manhattan’s Chinatown, confronted by steep rent rises and intense competition from local Chinese enclaves flourishing in Flushing, Queens and Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Not so, Wo Hop, hidden below street level at 17 Mott Street, in the heart of Chinatown. Owned by the Huang family since 1938, the 77 year-old Wo Hop just keeps plugging along.
